Norma Jean Dean

August 6, 1924 — October 30, 2021

Norma Jean was born in Nashville in August of 1924. Soon after that the family moved to Edgewater, Florida. Norma Jean attended Forest Lake Academy from 1938 – 1942 and then went to Washington Missionary College to earn her R.N. degree spending some of her practicum at New England Sanitarium and Hospital. She met and married to Cyril Dean in 1950. She had two daughters. Beverly was born in 1951 and Shirley in 1952. They lived in Angwin, California, where Cyril taught at Pacific Union College in the Physical Education Department. About 1962 Cyril earned his PhD. From Peabody University in Nashville where they lived for a year. Cyril was then called to Southern Missionary College where he chaired the P.E. Department for over 10 years. Norma Jean was a the night supervising nurse at Bradley County Hospital in Cleveland, Tennessee. Daughter Beverly took nursing at SMC and married Carl Swafford in 1973. After that Cyril and Norman Jean moved to Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, where Cyril chaired the P.E. Department at Canadian Union College. Norma Jean continued nursing. They enjoyed nature, especially Banff National Park. They skied, hiked, and picnicked around western Canada. After retirement the Dean’s moved to Six Mile, South Carolina until Cyril died of a heart attack leaving Norma Jean widowed. She next moved to Pisgah Manor at Candler, North Carolina. Then she moved to her duplex in Greenbriar Cove in Collegedale, Tennessee. Norma Jean was faithful in her attendance at the Apison SDA church. She made many good friends as she enjoyed pot luck almost every Sabbath. She was religious her exercise routine. She could “wear out” the exercycle and do pushups into her 90’s. Medical setbacks had her moved to Hickory Valley retirement Center and a fall sent her to Life Care when Covid hit. Her last year was in a small care facility where she was made comfortable and family and friends could visit. She looked forward to the Second Coming and was ready to meet her maker. Memorial service November 13, 2021, 3:00 p.m. in the Apison SDA Church, Apison, TN Please join the family and friends for a celebration of Norma’s life. Norma was preceded in death by her husband Cyril Dean and her daughter Beverly (Carl) Swafford. She is survived by her daughter Shirley Dean, two grandsons, Chris (Jodie) and Corbin (Julie) Swafford, and four grandchildren, Sadie, Jackson, Ryder, and Sophie. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Lester Coon Adventist School, Forest Kindergarten
