Gay Butler McNemer, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, died at home on May 29, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was 91 years old.
She was born in Atlanta, GA and attended Brenau College. In 1954, she married Philip Ames McNemer, to whom she was married for 58 years. They raised their family in Chattanooga, where she was an active member of Northminster Presbyterian Church and installed as a ruling elder. They later joined Rivermont Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Barnabas Group. Gay was also a member of the Chattanooga Quilters Guild for many years. She leaves behind a legacy of love for her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Monroe Butler and Ruth Key McDonald; husband, Philip McNemer; sisters, Marie Neel and Carol Oslin; and son-in-law, Rick Lanz.
She is survived by her daughters, Cathy Lanz of Knoxville, Ann (Ray) Barr and Marian (Steve) Joyce of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Ben (Claire) Lanz and Sarah Joyce of Greenville, SC, and Katie (Jordan) Halabrin of Chattanooga; great-grandchildren, Hannah Lanz, Caroline Lanz and Natalia Lanz of Greenville, SC, and Arthur Halabrin of Chattanooga; and her brother Graham (Page) McDonald of Fayetteville, GA.
There will be a private service for immediate family members. Memorial gifts may be made to Metropolitan Ministries, 4001 Rossville Blvd., Chattanooga, TN 37407 (www.met-min.org/donate) or any other favorite charity.
