Dorothy Mae Herold Somers Ping age 92, passed into the arms of Jesus on August 1, 2023. She was born in Bedford, Indiana on August 23, 1930 to her late parents, Frank and Agatha Herold. Dorothy married the late Dale Raymond Somers in 1953. When she was widowed in 1967, she was left to raise six children ranging from the ages of 3 years old to 12 years old alone. She then took her six children and moved to from Columbus, Indiana to Berrien Springs, Michigan. Here she finished her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Andrews University. She then relocated back to Columbus where she worked at the Department of Human Services until 1972.
In 1972, Dorothy again relocated the family to Collegedale, Tn., where she work at McKee Library and then was offered her dream job as Dean of Women at Southern Missionary College. She transitioned from having six children to having hundreds of children. She had a real burden on her heart to serve the Lord and to lead other to love the Lord. She finally retired from Southern to care for her aging mother in Columbus. Here she was reunited with her high school sweetheart, Lloyd Ping. They were married in 1993 and remained in Columbus until Lloyds passing in 2009. She then returned to Collegedale where she enjoyed being with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Agatha Herold; first husband, Dale Raymond Somers; husband Lloyd Ping
She is survived by her children, Dale “Rob” Somers (Sue), Dianne Somers Ward (Tom), Daryl Somers (Jeanna), Dwight Somers, David Somers (Cherice), Duane Somers; thirteen grandchildren; and twenty great grandchildren.
The final resting place will be in Columbus Indiana with her first husband and the father of her six children.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Collegedale Community Church in Collegedale, Tn., on August 26, 2023 at 4:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or to 3ABN in honor of Dorothy and Dale Somers
