Doris Meyers Barker

November 5, 1944 — November 8, 2021

Doris Meyers Barker, 77, of Cleveland, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, November 8, 2021, surrounded by her loving family after a hard fought battle with cancer.  She was born in Bonnie Blue, VA on November 5, 1944 to the late Reverend William C. and Sue Meyers.  Her father, being a pastor, she grew up in the Church of God and when possible attended the Tabernacle Church in Cleveland.  Doris was a woman of strong faith and her life touched the lives of many.  She had many gifts, one of which was being a great artist.  Doris had not used this gift in many years, but during this last difficult year of suffering, she would wake up in the night and paint what she felt the Lord was saying to her.  It turned out to be beautiful paintings of lighthouses, which depicted the Lord being there for her as she was going through the storm.  She used this as an encouragement for others.

She loved gardening.  Doris had the ability to describe an event in detail and make it hilarious.  She was good with one liners that will never be forgotten.  Doris lived a life of sacrifice and always put others needs before her own.  She was a dedicated daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.  Doris will always be cherished by her “grands” forever and will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.

Doris served in many roles during her life.  She was a tech in nursing homes and hospitals.  Prior to her retirement she was a dedicated employee of the Church of God International Offices for 23 years, having worked for the Evangelism and Home Missions and the World Missions departments.  She was used by the Lord to encourage the establishment of the Emma’s Kids Orphanage in Zambia, Africa.  The Lord gifted her to receive dreams and visions from Him that were a blessing and comfort to others throughout the years.

In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her special cousins, Eddie and Johnny Rupert.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 48 years, James “Jim” Barker; children, Pamela (Doug) Clark, Dean Peterson and Jimmy (Amy) Barker, all of Cleveland; grandchildren, Matthew and Christina Stutes, Beth McCloud, Eric Barker, Caleb Peterson and Victoria Cannon; great grandchildren, Megan, Ethan, Alyssa, Audrey, Vera, Braden, Frankie and Mayah; sister, Delores Stewart; and brother, Barry (Carla) Meyers.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 12, 2021 at Hilcrest Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Daniel Carlton officiating.

Her family will receive friends from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Serenity of Cleveland Funeral Home.
