Obituary: Horace Swafford, 81, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather went to God on Thursday, November 13th from his earthly home in McMinn County, surrounded by his loving family. He was a native and lifelong resident of McMinn County and of the Baptist faith.
Known to many as “The Coke Man”, he was employed by the Coca-Cola Bottling Company until 1979. He was later known for the McMinn County cantaloupes and watermelons that he raised. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Landon and Julie Poteet Swafford and his siblings, Edward Swafford, Nora Swafford Clark, Paul Swafford, and Winston Swafford.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Edith Crittenden Swafford; three daughters, Sandy Swafford Myers and her husband Mike Myers, Carolyn Swafford, and Tammy Swafford; five grandchildren, Julie Myers, Angie Wright and her husband Eric, Beau Matthews, Jennifer Matthews, Amber Hall and Marty Tallent; seven great-grandchildren, Lilly, Gia, Daniel, Ava, Eli, and Delilah Wright and Rachel Matthews; sisters-in-law, Daphne Crittenden Winder and Effie McReynolds Swafford and brother-in-law, Sherman Clark and several nieces and nephews.
Service: Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, November 15 at Serenity Funeral Home of Etowah with the Reverend Stanley Hammonds officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Saturday prior to the service.
Graveside service and interment will be 2 p.m. Sunday, November 16 at the Swafford Family Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you speak a kind word or do good deed for someone in Horace’s memory.
