Obituary: Alex Crumley, 66, of Athens, Tennessee, died October 2nd at his home on English
Lane.
The son of Ben A. and Chloey Eaves Crumley, Alex grew up in Etowah and has been a lifelong resident of McMinn County. He attended elementary and high school in Etowah, graduating in 1966 among members of the last class at Etowah High School, and served as the last student body president of Etowah High School. Alex was an Honor Graduate and was chosen one of the original members of the Etowah Sports Hall of Fame. Continuing his education at Tennessee Wesleyan College, he was inducted into the Alpha Chi Honor Society and graduated cum laude in 1970.
At one time Alex was employed by the McMinn County Sheriff’s Department where he worked as a chief deputy and as a detective. He later became a rural mail carrier, establishing a good rapport with folks on his route.
After thirty-four years of delivering mail, Alex retired and with his wife, Jenny, enjoyed
traveling, helping others, and leisure time with their many friends. Alex was especially happy with his membership--and the coffee and conversations--in the “Bojangles Liars’ Club.”
Alex was a faithful, deeply loved parishioner of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Athens, where he served on the vestry, as an usher, as Junior Warden, and in other ministries. He just simply and humbly helped wherever he could meet a need. In 2012 Alex successfully, and with distinction, graduated from the Education for Ministry program--an intensive, four-year academic course offered at St. Paul’s as a continuing education program from the School of Theology at the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee.
Alex Crumley was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Chloey Eaves Crumley and his
brother-in-law, Preston McClary.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jennifer McClary Crumley; his mother-in-law, Juanita McClary; one brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Marie Crumley of Ooltewah, Tennessee; one sister, Elizabeth Crumley Harris of Red Bank, Tennessee; several nieces and nephews.
Service: A burial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, October 6, 2014 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with the Reverend Hendree Harrison officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
