Obituary: H. Peyton Watson, Jr. entered life January 6, 1924 and died in Athens, TN on Firday, March 14, 2014. He was 90 years old.
Peyton was born in Knoxville, TN to Howard and Vivian Watson. During his teen years he joined the Boy Scouts and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. In his senior year at Knoxville High School, Peyton was president of the R.O.T.C. band (saxophone), president of the Christian Fellowship Club, and president of the National Honor Society.
His education at the University of Tennessee was interupted by World War II, where he served in the Navy. While at boot camp he sang with the Dirty Dozen group on Sunday mornings over a Chicago radio station.
He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a B.S. degree in Business Management. He was house manager and treasurer of his fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta. He was a member of the U.T. Chorus and served as president.
In 1986 he retired from Tennessee Eastman in Kingsport, after 38 years of service. He was a senior financial analyst.
For several years he delivered Meals on Wheels. He attended Kingsport Alliance for Continued Learning, and was treasurer for 11 years. He sang with Kingsport Symphony Chorus for many years. His hobbies included bridge, singing, golf, and emailing. He was a charter member of Grandfather Mountain Golf and Country Club in Linville, NC and Ridgefields Country Club in Kingsport, TN. He participated in a marathon bridge group which he enjoyed very much.
He was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Kingsport, TN where he served as treasurer, vestryman, and choir member. He sang in his church choirs in Knoxville and Kingsport for over 70 years.
Peyton was a longtime resident of Kingsport and moved to Athens, TN in May 2013 to be close to his family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia Parker Watson, of 64 years on January 4, 2014. He is survived by his son, Howard Watson, and wife, Jane Chastain, of Athens, TN; his daughter, Vivien Ruiz, and husband, Ted Ruiz, of the Philippines: grandchildren David Ruiz and wife, Liz, of Indiana, Rebecca Ruiz of Vietnam, and Sara Ruiz of California.
Service: There will be a memorial service in July at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Kingsport, TN. Plans will be announced later. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the music or organ fund at St. Paul's Church, 161 Ravine Road, Kingsport, TN 37660
