Obituary: Edna Culberson Cardin, age 78, of Athens, passed away on May 7, 2015 at 12:23 p.m. at Willow Acres Home for Seniors in Riceville, after a long battle with dementia/ Alzheimer’s Disease.

A daughter of the late John and Sarah Culberson, Edna was born on April 6, 1937, in Englewood. She graduated from Englewood High School to 1955 and received a degree in nursing from the Baroness Erlanger Hospital School of Nursing in Chattanooga on September 5, 1958.

After receiving her degree, Edna worked for over 40 years in the Emergency Room and various other departments of the Athens Hospital where her compassion, good cheer and exceptional nursing skills brought relief and comfort to countless patients.

Edna was an avid gardener and loved working in her yard among her flowers, as well as tending to her vegetable garden. Her greatest enjoyment in life derived from spending time with her grandchildren and her sisters.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, George Culberson, Hubert Culberson, and Charlie Culberson; sisters, Beulah Culberson Green and Magdalene Culberson White.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years Wayne Cardin of Athens; daughters, Sherry Cardin Cody and husband Rusty of Jacksonville, FL and Pam Cardin Clayton and husband Scott of Nashville; grandchildren, Lauren Cody Suttle, Ben Cody, Sydney Clayton, Sam Clayton, and Sally Jane Clayton; sisters Bonnie Culberson Hunt, Trula Culberson Fleming, and Jessie Culberson Lipoma. Several nieces, nephews, and other extended family also survive.

Service: The family will receive friends from 5-7p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7p.m. Saturday, May 9, 2015 from the chapel of Serenity Funeral Home.

Family and friends will meet at 11a.m. Sunday, May 10, 2015 at McMinn Memory Gardens for the committal service.
