Obituary: Mason “Mutt” Akins, age 87, of Athens, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was of Christian faith. A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was retired from Athens Stove Works and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed sports, especially watching the Tennessee Vols and Atlanta Braves, and was a former athlete and little league coach. He also enjoyed farming and spending time with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Brunner and Nola Pickens Akins; infant brother and sister, Charlie and Thelma Akins, and daughter-in-law, Annette Akins.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 61 years, Reba Akins of Athens; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Beauford Fugate of Riceville, Pam and Tim Cathey of Etowah, and Shawna and Tommy Crowe of Etowah; son Rickey Akins of Athens; grandchildren, Andrea Broadway of Cleveland, Amanda and Josh Bostic of Athens, Nathan Fugate of Cleveland, Jennifer Robinette of Chattanooga, Cayci Cathey of Knoxville, Jessica Cathey of Knoxville, Stacey Akins of Athens, Matthew Akins of Athens, Taylor Cook and fiancée , Shelby Brady of Athens, Tanner Cook of Athens, Trevor Peel of Athens, and Lauren Taylor Crowe of Athens; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ed Akins, Thurman and Margie Akins, Kenneth and Barb Akins, and Gary and Ann Akins; sisters, Geneieve Clabo and Maggie Crabtree; special friends , Larry and Evelyn Rowland, and Danny and Dianne Malone and family; and two special little friends, Macey Malone and Lincoln Rule. Several nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends also survive.
Service: Funeral services will be conducted at 7p.m. Friday, January 16, 2015, from the chapel of Serenity Funeral Home with Bro. Titus Snyder and Bro. John Crabtree officiating.
Graveside services will be 2p.m. Saturday, January 17, 2015 at Jones Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with a white dove release concluding the services.
The family will receive friends form 5-7p.m. Friday at the funeral home prior to the service.
