Obituary: Sue Hafley Guffey, age 80, of Athens, went home to rest Saturday morning, September 13, 2014 surrounded by her family. The daughter of the late William Hafley,Jr. and Arlie Belle Cissom Hafley, she was a native and lifelong resident of McMinn County attended Woodward Ave Church of GOD since it was just a tent. She was a banker for over 30 years and retired from Citizens National Bank. She was known affectionately by her family as the “Pioneer Lady” because of her bravery and independence. Sue enjoyed “piddling “in the yard, singing in the senior choir at Woodward Ave and later at the Athens Senior Citizen Center, and keeping up with family and friends.
She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Judy Coffey; sisters, Willie Nell Hafley and Velma Ables; and brothers, J.B and Clifford Hafley.
She is survived by her daughters, DeLane Howard and husband Delane of Riceville and Crystal Yanculeff and husband Christo of Athens; grandchildren, Kevin Howard and wife Shawna of Cleveland, Justin Howard and wife Mendy of Athens, Heath Coffey and wife Dianne, Shane Coffey and wife Christy, and Aaron Coffey, all of Murfreesboro; sisters, Edna Lawson of Ten Mile, Clara Haney of Athens, and Alanda “Blossom” Southerland of Hendersonville. Thirteen great-grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends also survive.
Service: The family held a private celebration of her life on Monday, September 15, 2014 at Serenity Funeral Home.
