Obituary: Bart Lee “B.L.” Hipps, age 71, of Englewood, went to his heavenly home Wednesday morning, June 18, 2014, at a Knoxville hospital. A native of and lifelong resident of McMinn County he was retired after 33 years of service from Athens Stove and was of the Christian Faith. A great man of few words, who loved the solitude of his front porch swing, the rustle of the falling leaves in his yard, the lonesome sound of a hoot owl perched on the knob, the smell of honeysuckle in the spring, and the smoldering hickory wood from the chimney in the winter. He enjoyed “wetting the hook” with a friend, planting a flower to bring color in the spring, and whistling a song.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Alice Ervin Hipps; son-in-law, Kenny Coleman; sister Dolly Martin; brother, Danny Hipps; and brother-in-laws, Wayne Dyke, Clarence Harris, and Robert Martin
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Carolyn Hipps of Englewood; son ,Brent Hipps and wife Tonya Hipps of Athens; Daughter, Leanna Coleman of Englewood; grandchildren, Braden Coleman, Cade Hipps, and Brody Hipps; siblings Glenda Harris and husband Joe of Englewood, Marge Harris of Englewood; sisters-in-law, Virginia Dyke of Athens, Alma Jo Casteel and husband Charles of Etowah, Sharon Harris and husband Randall of Englewood, and Shelia Crabtree and husband Ray of Calhoun. Several nieces, nephews and other extended family members also survive.
Service: A celebration of B.L.’s life will be conducted at 7p.m. Friday, June 20, 2014, from the chapel of Serenity Funeral Home with Bro. Joe Harris officiating. Interment will be 11a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014 in the Cochran Cemetery with Tim Wise, Scott Harris, Justin Constant, Austin Constant, Braden Coleman, and Alan Dyke serving as active pallbearers and Vance and Odell Staffels serving as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 5-7p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
