Gerard Steven Murphy, age 58, resident of Etowah, TN, passed away Saturday, August 1, 2015, at his residence. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Sarasota, Florida. For over 20 years, Gerard was active in umpiring baseball, basketball and football. For the past 10 years, he was an active member of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association. He was formerly a truck driver with J. B. Hunt. While living in Florida, Gerard and two others started the Christian Teen Center in Sarasota, Florida where he taught bible study twice a week. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Rosalie Martz and Edward Murphy. He is survived by his step-father, Gordon Mikitka and his wife, Helena, of Athens, TN; two brothers, Kevin Patrick Murphy and wife, Millie, Sarasota, FL and Sean David Murphy. Nephews and nieces also survive. A Memorial Service for Gerard Murphy will be held Thursday, August 6, 2015, at 8:00 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Home of Etowah with Chaplain Robert Conway, officiating and Joe Watson speaking on behalf of the Athens Baseball Umpires Association Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Athens Baseball Umpires Association, Tri County Football Association, and the Athens Basketball Officials Association The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Serenity Funeral Home of Etowah.
