Velma P. Watts, age 92, of Etowah, passed away Thursday morning, January 28, 2016, at a local healthcare facility. Born November 18, 1923 in Georgia to the late Tom and Susie Poteet , she was a native and lifelong resident of McMinn County. After graduating from Tennessee Wesleyan College, She began her career as an educator teaching for over 30 years first at Etowah High School and then McMinn Central High School. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Etowah and a member of the Etowah Chapter of The Eastern Star. Mrs. Watts enjoyed reading, traveling throughout many European Countries and spending time with family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Q. Watts; sisters, Sarah Coranto, Pearl Huffman, Claude Malone, Betty Arnold Kathyleen Mull, and Joan Owens; and brothers, S.L. Poteet and J.L. Poteet.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Tyresha and Jack Isbill, Sr. of Athens; sister, Jean White of Athens, and brother, Bennie Poteet of Delano. Several nieces, nephews, and other extended family also survive.
A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, January 31, 2016 at Green Hill Cemetery with Pastor Pete Mullins officiating. Tommy Owens, Don Barnet, Jackie Lee Isbill, Jr , Gregory Moore, and Bud Mull will serve as pallbearers. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the services.
The family will receive friends from 1-3p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
