Betty Jewell Corn Nivens, age 83, of Etowah, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at her residence. Born on February 15, 1933 to the late Rupert and Mabel Cline Corn, She was a native and lifelong resident of McMinn County and a longtime member of Carlock United Methodist Church. She taught school for several years in McMinn County and Polk County and retired in 1980. Betty was an avid gardener and enjoyed cooking, baking, babysitting, and spending time with family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, G.B. and Dale Corn.
Betty is survived by her children, Roy Lynn Nivens and fiancé Annette McCaslin, Philip Nivens and wife Connie,and Kyle Bruce Nivens all of Etowah; grandchildren, Steven Lynn Nivens of Madisonville, Philip Kyle Nivens and wife Misty of Sumter, South Carolina, Courtney Hope Watson and husband Chris ofLebanon,Tennessee, Tabitha Shay Cooley and husband Chris of Etowah, Tyler Bruce Nivens of Etowah, and Ashley Michelle Lee of Reliance; great grandchildren, Kaden Nivens, Mason Nivens, Aaron Nivens, Brylee Cooley, Gunner Cooley, Annslee Jewell Cooley, Catherine Watson, Ellie Lee, and Casin Lee; siblings, Norma Corn White of Athens, Sylvia Gallman of Rocky Face, Georgia, Sherry Bowman and husband Scott of Sweetwater, Jerry Corn of Chatsworth, Georgia, Clara LaFrance and husband Joe of Blue Ridge, Georgia, Teddy Corn and wife Janet of Etowah, and a special cousin, Mary Altys Calhoun of Athens. Several nieces, nephews, and numerous extended family also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2p.m. Saturday, October 15, 2016 from the chapel of Serenity Funeral Home with Brother Jason Humberd and Brother Joe Hatcher officiating. Interment will follow in the Coghill Baptist Church Cemetery with Steven Nivens, Kyle Nivens, Chris Watson, Chris Cooley, Tyler Nivens, Timothy Corn, and Adam Lee serving as pallbearers. Nieces and nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 5-8p.m Friday, October 14, 2016 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Coghill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or to the American Cancer Society.
