David James, age 77 of Etowah, passed away on Wednesday morning, April 11, 2018, at Starr Regional Health and Rehabilitation. Born on July 2, 1940 to the late William and Helen Swann James, he was a native and lifelong resident of McMinn County and a member and former deacon at First Baptist Church of Etowah.
David was a longtime official and umpire with the TSSAA, he taught and coached at E.K.Baker , Reliance, Etowah City, and Riceville schools. He was the editor of the Etowah Enterprise , owned the Polk County News, and served his community as a City Commissioner and former Vice-Mayor of Etowah.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Jean James of Etowah; brother Chris(Joyce) James of Etowah; sister-in-law, Dean Newman of Chattanooga; niece, Jennifer( Walter) Hershey of Etowah; nephews, Mark(Leslie) Newman of Dallas, Texas, Matthew(Stephanie) Newman of Atlanta, and John(Laura) James of Etowah.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 3p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2018 from First Baptist Church with Rev. John E. Pennington , Jr and Rev. Allan Lovelace officiating.
The family will receive friends from 2p.m. until the funeral hour at the church on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church of Etowah
