David Nolan Guffey age, 73 of Athens, passed away Thursday evening, May 24, 2018 at his home. A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was born May 27, 1944, the son of the late Homer Franklin Guffey Jr and Eula Blanch Nunley of McMinn County. David graduated from McMinn County High School in 1962, earning a degree in Education from Cleveland State Community College, and AS degree in Business Administration from Roane State, as well as a BS degree from the University of Tennessee in Social Studies. He retired from the Navy as a Command Master Chief Petty Officer after serving 26 years. He was co-founder and Vice- President of Mid South Optical of Athens and was co-owner and President of E D and E Distributers of Ten Mile. He was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Athens. He enjoyed is retirement traveling, woodworking, golfing, watching movies, but most of all spending time with his granddaughter and great- grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife and companion of 40 years, Elizabeth Gail Bishop Guffey of Athens, son and daughter-in-law, David and Kimi Guffey of Leesburg, Florida, daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Glen Shott of Las Vegas, Nevada, a granddaughter, Kacy Guffey of Etowah, two great- grandchildren, Jadien and Zayden Guffey of Etowah, brother Eric Guffey of Athens, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law, Tammie and Fred Packett of Athens and Several nieces and nephews.
A gathering of friends and family to celebrate the life of Master Chief David Guffey will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Serenity Funeral Home in Etowah.
Burial with Full Military Honors will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
