Charles A. Greene, Sr., age 81, resident of Huntsville, AL and formerly of Cleveland, TN, passed away Saturday, February 23, 2008, in Huntsville Hospital. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cleveland, TN. Born in Sutton, West Virginia, Charlie was educated in the public schools of Sutton. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an electricians mate. Upon graduation from the West Virginia Institute of Technology, he became a registered professional engineer in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Alabama. He retired from Rust Engineering as chief engineer of the Oak Ridge office. Charlie was a member of the Masonic Lodge #134 F.& A.M. and the Chattanooga Scottish Rite Club where he served as past president. He was also past president of AARP chapter # 3412. At First Presbyterian Church he served as an elder and was a member of Merry Hearts. Affectionately called Sam by family members, he developed a lifelong love of gardening, and several of his trees still flourish on the grounds of First Presbyterian. Charlie, a devoted husband, was preceded in death by his bride of 57 years Margaret Lynn Canfield, his parents Raymond and Vergie Greene, his sister Jessie Greathouse, and his brothers John and H.F. (Bob) Greene.
He is survived by a sister, Carole Martin of Jacksonville, FL; and three sons: Charles Allen Greene Jr. and wife Carol of Knoxville, TN, Jeffrey Lee Greene and wife Susan of Huntsville, AL, and William Edward Greene of Los Angeles, CA. Grandad will be missed by grandchildren Gina, Megan, Candace, Rachel, Carrie, Patrick, and Philip, and by great-grandchildren Will and Caleb. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Grissom Funeral Home with the Dr. Joe Tanner presiding. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 26, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday.
