Russell C. Hughes of Cleveland found his eternal rest on Wednesday July 14th, at age 85. Russell was born in California, Ohio on October 18th, 1924, the 7th of 9 children born to Alexander and Ada Hughes. Russell was the Co-founder and President of Claremont Homes, along with his wife Clarone. Russell graduated from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education, completed graduate work at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga before earning his Masters degree in Library Science from George Peabody College for Teachers. Russell was an educator for Bradley County High School, starting their summer school program. He then worked as Head Librarian for The Baylor School for Boys in Chattanooga before finally returning to Cleveland serving as Librarian for East Cleveland School and Michigan Avenue School. He was a member of the North Cleveland Church of God. Russell was a decorated World War II veteran. He served in five campaigns that included Normandy and the Ardenne Forest, as well as working for one year after the war in the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. His designation was Combat Medic. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Clarone Clark Hughes. Russell is survived by his three children, David Clark Hughes, Russell Thomas Hughes, and Susan Hughes Patton; six grandchildren: Courtney Cofield, Paul Hughes, Jennifer Sims, Robert Hughes, Lauren Rich, Jonathan Hobbs and five great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Grissom Funeral Home with Pastor Mitch Maloney officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors concluding the service. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
