Irene Metaxas, 87, died peacefully at her home after a lengthy illness. She has been a resident of Cleveland for the past 39 years. She was born on March 4, 1921 on the British island of Cyprus. She worked at American Uniform Co. until she retired in 1986. She was very well known in the community. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kyriakos and Anastasia Pavlidou; sisters, Maritsa, Panayiota, Athena, and Eleni; brothers, George, Christos, and Paul; son, Nikiphoros Metaxas; and son-in-law, Don Snow.
Survivors include:, her beloved husband of 64 years, Michael Metaxas; brother, Antonio Pavlidou of Queensland, Australia; children include John Metaxas and wife Elaine; Georgia Snow; Esther Metaxas; Chris Metaxas, and wife Teresa; Dinos Metaxas; Tassos Metaxas and wife June; grandchildren include Jennifer Conway and husband Dave; Rachel Metaxas, Stephanie and Shelley Snow; Ana Maria and Michael Metaxas, Paul and Stephen Metaxas, and Alexander Metaxas.great-grandchildren include Davey Conway, Levi Conway, Seth Conway, Sarah Conway and Kaleigh Snow.
She loved gardening, and flowers, knitting, cooking, and had a gift of hospitality. She attended Peerless Road Church of God of Prophecy and was a faithful member of the Union Grove Church of God of Prophecy for many years. She leaves to cherish her memories as a precious wife, mother, and grandmother Yaya, who will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 pm on Monday, March 31, 2008 at the Grissom Funeral Home.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, in the chapel of Grissom Funreral Home with Bishop Tony Charalambou and Pastor Gene Dasher officiating. The interment will follow at the Sunset Memorial Gardens with Chris, Dinos, Tassos, Paul, Michael, and Stephen Metaxas serving as pallbearers.
