James Madison Mitchell, Jr., age 87, resident of Cleveland, TN, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2009 at his residence with his loving family by his side. He had been the faithful husband of Ivey June Glass Mitchell who preceded him in death after 65 years of marriage.

Mr. Mitchell was employed with Bell South and retired as a district engineer after 50 years of service. He was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church. He was active in his church, loved camping with his family, played tennis into his 70s, was an accomplished runner and a life long Mr. Stix It for things that were broken. Mr. Mitchell served as a B-17 navigator in Europe during World War II. His bucket list included flights on two restored B-17s, a flight in a glider, a flight with is grandson as pilot and trips to see his grandsons in San Diego, Phoenix, Lewisville, TX and Madison, Wisconsin.

He was a devoted father to Dr. Jo Lee Mitchell DeVane of Cleveland and James Hart Mitchell of Lewisville, TX. Loving family includes daughter in law, Marianne Mitchell of Lewisville, TX, son in law, Dr. Jerry DeVane of Cleveland, TN; grandsons, Zach and Jake Mitchell of Lewisville, TX, Taylor DeVane of Phoenix, AZ and Ben DeVane and his wife Amanda of Madison, Wisconsin. He also leaves his buddy and granddaughter, Brianna June DeVane of Cleveland; brother in law, Joseph Glass, Atlanta, GA and numerous nieces and nephews and friends also survive.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery. The procession will depart Grissom Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at 3:00 p.m. at Broad Street United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the church.

Memorials may be made to N-Light-N Youth Choir c/o Broad Street United Methodist Church, Cleveland, TN.
