Rev William T. Morefield

The Reverend William T. Morefield, born on March 11, 1903, died Saturday, September 9, 2006 at the age of 103. Reverend Morefield was the oldest Ordained Bishop in the Church of God. He evangelized and pastored churches for 65 years prior to this retirement. After retirement, he continued to minister and fill in where needed in various churches. While active, Reverend Morefield built three churches, all of which are active and successful today"two of them having private schools from grades 1 through 12. He built and pastored the churches in Pulaski, Virginia, Crisfield, Maryland, and Whitwell, Tennessee. Other pastorates include Tazewell, Virginia, Dunfordtown, Virginia, St. Charles, Virginia and Johnson City, Tennessee. During his ministry, Reverend Morefield preached thousands of sermons and led hundreds to the Lord. He continually received cards and letters from people who were converted under his ministry years ago, expressing their admiration and love for him and his wife, Lina, who preceded him in death in 1997. His six brothers and three sisters also preceded him in death.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Joshua Thomas of Cleveland with whom he made his home; two grandchildren, Joan Thomas and her husband, Michael of Summertown, Tennessee and Billy Thomas of Cleveland; two great grandchildren, April and Josh Thomas of Atlanta, Georgia.

Funeral services will be conducted at Westmore Church of God on Tuesday, September 12, at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Dennis McGuire, Reverend Kenneth Bolton and Reverend Wendell Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with ministerial students from the Church of God Theological Seminary serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be retired ministers.
