Carl Murray died May 5, 2009 in Cleveland, Tennessee. Carl was born May 27, 1924 in Ooltewah, Tennessee to G.H. and Nora Belle Spencer Murray. He was a descendant of the Sam Murray family that settled in Bradley County in the early 1880s. For most of his life, he was a resident of the Prospect community where he was a member of the New Prospect Cumberland Presbyterian Church. As a young man, he was co-owner of the Cofer-Murray Standard Oil Distributorship located in the Three-Point area of Cleveland. He was a deputy sheriff during the Paul Jones Administration. He worked with the Charles Winkler Construction Company as a homebuilder and later worked as a self-employed carpenter. Before retiring, he worked 10 years with the Bradley County Road Department.
He was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother, Geneva Cunningham Murray; Brothers-Clifford, Roy Lee, Leonard and Billy.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Irene Moreland Murray; daughters Rebecca and husband Paul Woosley, and Kathy and husband Jeff Morelock. Other survivors include three grandchildren: Jacquelyn Ayers, Davis (Ashlan) Morelock and Kate Morelock; two great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jackson Ayers. Brothers and Sisters: Ray (Carolyn) Murray, Frances (Jim) Swafford, Carolyn (Jim) Milligan, Garland (Sherry) Murray, Garry (Janice) Murray and Gordon Murray. Also a host of nieces, nephews and cousins also survive, as well as, special friends and neighbors.
Visitation will be at Grissom Funeral Home on Thursday, May 7th from 5pm until 8pm. Service will be held at Grissom at 11am Friday, May 8th with visitation at 10am.
Interment will follow in the Murray Cemetery in the Prospect Community. Pall bearers are Paul Woosley, Davis Morelock, Jim Swafford, Garry Murray, Brian Swafford and Jeff Morelock.
