Senior Chief Petty Officer Bela O. Short (Bud) of Cleveland, Tennessee, formerly of Victorville, California departed this life Friday, November 19, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd D. Short and Bernice Hawley Short and sisters Margaret Brosite and Marion Wood.

Born January 23, 1925 in Oneida, New York, he grew up in Saratoga County New York. Immediately following graduation from Saratoga Springs High School in 1943, he joined the United States Navy during World War II. He retired in 1974 with the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer after serving his country for 30 years.

During World War II, he served in Adak, Alaska in the Aleutian Islands and in Okinawa. He also served in Guam, Kwajalein, Philippines, and Thailand as well as three tours of duty in Vietnam. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal and numerous other personal awards and campaign medals. Following retirement, he worked as a US Contractor on the Marshall Islands.

Mr. Short is survived by his wife Helen McFarland Short; son Arthur Allen Reynolds and wife Brenda of Naples, Florida; daughter Jacklyn Kathleen West and husband Dave of North Creek, New York; seven grand children and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by stepson Barry McFarland of Hood River, Oregon; and stepson and daughter-in-law Larry and Deborah McFarland of Cleveland and their children Grant McFarland of Cleveland and Suzanne McFarland Arceneaux and husband Brett of Gonzales, Louisiana.

He was a faithful member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Cleveland and was a member of the Veterans of the First World War, SeaBee Veterans of America, and Vietnam Veterans of America.

The family will receive friends at Grissom Funeral Home in Cleveland, Tennessee Monday, November 22 from 6-8 p.m. The funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 23 at Grissom Funeral Home with Rev. Cliff Hudson officiating. Interment will follow at the National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tennessee with full military honors. Mark Hall, Jeff Morelock, Russ Griffith, Ed Sharp and Robert Shipman will serve as honorary pallbearers.

* * * The toll of the ships bell reminds us of the reverence we owe to our departed Shipmates and to those who guard the honor of our country upon the sea, under the sea, in the air, and upon foreign soil. Let it be a reminder of the faith they confide in us. Let us who gather here not forget our obligations, and in silence breathe a prayer for our absent Shipmates.
