Bill G. Moore, former County Commissioner for the First District, born May 8, 1933, went home to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by his family at his home in Cleveland, Tennessee on March 13, 2011 at the age of 77. He was born and raised in Charleston, Tennessee. He held a high school diploma, earned a business degree, and received formal instructional training from the United States Air Force Academy. He served his country in the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas and flew with Squadron 45. He was a veteran of the Korean War and played baseball while overseas. Several major league baseball teams asked Bill to play for them, but because practices were held on Sundays, he declined due to his religious convictions. During his professional career, he was the Staff Manager and a Million Dollar Salesman for National Trust Life Insurance Company. He also worked at Combustion Engineering, Superior Olds-Cadillac, Benton-Pontiac Buick, and Griff's Auto Sales. He retired from the Bradley County Courthouse where he worked as a court officer. He served his community in various capacities. He was a County Commissioner for the First District for eight years and in this capacity, he was Chairman of the Land Committee, and a member of the Emergency Medical Services Committee, Law Enforcement Committee, and Work Release Committee. He was the Chairman of Toys for Tots for 15 years, delivered food to the needy every year, was a member of the Military Firing Squad and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 81. Bill touched the lives of many people and maintained his trademark sense of humor to the very end. He loved to tell jokes and stories and was the type of person who never met a stranger. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Candies Creek Baptist Church. He was the youngest child born to the late Elijah and Lella Mae Moore and was preceded in death by his brothers, Roy, Minor, R. C., and James; sisters, Rose, Hazel, Marie, and Wilma; and grandson, Gabe Moore. He is survived by Joan, his devoted wife of 45 years; his children who were the light of his life, Yvonne Leamon of Cleveland, Victoria Preston of Louisville, KY, Brian Moore of Cleveland, step-son, Ricky Shelton of Charleston, TN, Steve Moore of Chattanooga, and Mickey Corbett of Spokane, WA; grandchildren, Amanda Price, Caroline Preston, Tyler Leamon, Jacob Moore, and Michelle Moore; and countless other friends and family whom were blessed to know him. No funeral service will be held as it was his wish to have his remains donated to the Forensic Anthropology Center at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
