James G. Cate, Jr., 89, of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2012 in a Chattanooga hospital. He received a B.A. degree from the University of the South in 1947 and a J.D. degree from Duke University in 1950. Mr. Cate also served in the United States Army overseas during World War II. He was vice president, general counsel and secretary of Bowaters United States Coporation, Bowaters Southern Paper Corporation and Bowater Carolina Corporation. Mr. Cate served as campaign chairman and president of the United Way of Bradley County, president of the Bradley County Bar Association and director of Junior Achievement of Bradley and McMinn Counties. He was also a director of the Merchants Bank. Mr. Cate had been a trustee and a member of the Board of Regents of the University of the South, president of the alumni association of the University of the South, a trustee of Cleveland State Community College, director of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Chattanooga and a member of the Newcomen Society in North America and the Kiwanis Club. He was also a member of the Chattanooga and American Bar Associations and was retired from Miller & Martin Law Firm after many years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, James G. Cate, Sr. and Alitha Smith Cate. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Wheland Cate of Cleveland and daughter, Margaret Cate of Denver, CO. A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday, March 23, 2012 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church with the Reverend Joel Huffstetler officiating. Interment will follow in St. Luke's Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends Friday from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at St. Luke's Parish Hall prior to the service.
