Robert R. "Cappy" Irwin, 91, of Cleveland, passed away Monday, December 24, 2012. After serving as a part of the United States Army Medical Corps during World War II, he was employed as an electrician by US Steel in Gary, Indiana until his retirement, when he and his wife began a business which allowed them to travel together. He has lived in Cleveland, TN for the past ten years. Mr. Irwin found faith in Christ while in the Baptist denomination and as an adult served the Lord in Nazarene, Assemblies of God and Church of God congregations. Most recently he attended the Peerless Road Church. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Dearing Irwin after 61 years of marriage and his parents, Albert Ray and Hazel Demasters Irwin. Survivors include his children, Bobbie Brinson of Indianapolis, IN; Lynn Alderman of Cleveland, TN and Mary Gambill and husband, Roger of Kearneysville, WV; sister, Helen Elizabeth "Beth" Noak of Crown Point, IN; grandchildren, Kerri Brinson Morris and husband, Daniel of Indianapolis, IN, Julie Brinson Dutcher and husband, Roger of Plainfield, IN, Rob Alderman and Ken Alderman and wife, Jaime, all of Cleveland, Herbert Ray Gambill of Tampa, FL, Krisina Gambill Ward of Kearneysville, WV and Elizabeth Peleaz of Tampa, FL; 15 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 28, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. in the chapel of Grissom Funeral Home with William Lamb officiating. Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors. His family will receive friends on Friday from 10:00-12:00 at the funeral home prior to the service.
