Charles Douglas Boring

February 29, 1956 — July 21, 2013

Doug Boring Charles Douglas Boring, 57, entered into his eternal rest on Sunday, July 21, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. Having fought a courageous battle with cancer, he finally surrendered his weary body and received his new body in heaven. Doug's devotion to the study and exhortation of the Bible was known to all of his family, friends and church family members. He had many opportunities during his life to teach in different settings. Doug served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Waterville Baptist Church, an assistant chaplain at the Bradley County Justice Center, a Bible study leader at First Baptist Church and conducted expositional Bible studies at area churches. At the time of his death, he was teaching a men's class at First Baptist Church. Doug was a martial arts competitor and instructor at the YMCA for many years. He formed lifelong friendships with many of his fellow competitors and students. His love for hiking in the Great Smokey Mountains was contagious and he enjoyed introducing new hikers to his favorite trails, but his favorite hiking companion was his son Mark. Doug was a devoted son, husband, father, brother, and friend. Every person he met knew that he lived by the creed that his faith in God and relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ were his strength and hope. Preceding him in death was his father: Elmer Boring; grandparents: John and Alice Darnell and Joe and Mildred Boring. Doug leaves behind his wife and best friend, Dara Masengil Boring, with whom he celebrated 34 years of marriage; his daughter: Lara Helton and husband Steven, whom he loved as a son; his son: Mark Boring and future daughter-in-law Sarah Buckner. Other survivors are his mother: Ruth Boring, brother: Greg Boring and spouse, Lori; sister: Melissa Newsome and spouse, Bo; his mother-in-law: Betty Masengil; sister-in-law: Denise Hatfield and brother-in-law Richard Hatfield, as well as five nephews, one niece and a great-nephew. The funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 in the chapel of Grissom Funeral Home with the Reverend Tom Wickes of First Baptist Church, Joe Washington, and members of the Doug Boring Sunday School Class at First Baptist officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with David Croft, Barry Dykes, Steve Goins, Steve Hixson, Mike Jolley and Monty Walker serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Doug Boring Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Grissom Funeral Home. We invite you to view the Boring family guest book and send a message of comfort to www.grissomfh.net. Grissom Funeral Home and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
