Sayle Andrews Milne Bowen, 87, a native of Cleveland, passed away Monday, March 17, 2014, in a local hospital. She was a 1949 graduate of the University of Chattanooga (UC) and Bradley Central High School, Class of 1945. At UC, she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She later taught freshman English at Bradley Central in 1951-52 and taught junior high school studies at the Cleveland Day School in 1975-76. Between teachings, she accompanied her husband, Lt. Cmdr. Albert Sidney Bowen III, USN on Navy assignments throughout the world including postings in Puerto Rico and the Republic of Korea. With sly humor, she entertained as the comedic foil in the world-famous Sid and Sayle Traveling Roadshow. Mrs. Bowen served on the Vestry at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where she was a member since 1971. She was also one the first female chalice bearers and lay readers, and was a member of the Standing Committee of the Diocese of East Tennessee. She was a member of various social organizations, including the Ocoee Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Cleveland-Athens Cotillion, and of late, the Embroidery Club. She was active in area pet rescue and the placement of dogs from Cleveland Animal Control. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Milne and Angelle Andrews Milne; her brother, John Milne Jr.; and her husband, Lt. Cmdr. Bowen, then retired. Mrs. Bowen is survived by her son, Lt. Cmdr. Bryan McDonald Bowen, USN retired and wife Katie, of Chantilly, VA; daughter, Elizabeth Lesley Milne Bowen, of Lexington, KY; grandchildren, Jennifer and Amanda Bowen, of Chantilly, VA; nephew, Jack Milne and wife Nancy, of Cleveland; and several godchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Joel Huffstetler officiating. Interment will follow in St. Luke's Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 5, from 12 until 1:30 p.m. at the Parish Hall prior to the service.
